The first priority, when possible, is moving it off the road and away from traffic. Once stopped safely, use emergency flashers to show that the vehicle is disabled and take additional steps to warn approaching road users. Leaving the vehicle in the lane increases collision risk, darkening it removes a warning, and standing behind it exposes a person to moving traffic. Put distance between occupants and the traffic stream whenever the situation permits.
