safe-driving
A front tire blows out while you are driving in Utah. Which way will the vehicle pull?
- Away from the blown tire
- Straight ahead with no change
- Hard toward the blown tire
- Toward the center of the road regardless of side
Answer: Hard toward the blown tire. A front blowout changes the rolling resistance on one side, so the handbook warns that the vehicle will pull hard toward the blown tire. Knowing that lets you hold the wheel firmly and steer against the pull instead of being surprised by it. It does not pull away from the failed tire, it will not track straight, and the direction depends on which tire failed, not on the road. Ease off the gas, avoid hard braking, keep the vehicle straight, and move off the road once it has slowed.
