Getting your first permit

In Utah, the minimum permit age is 15 years old. When you apply for a permit or license, bring: proof of identity, lawful presence if not a United States citizen, Social Security number, Utah address, appointment confirmation, fee payment, and parent or guardian financial responsibility signature if under 18. Fees, retakes, and practice hours

$19 learner permit fee; after three written test failures, a second fee is required. If you fail the knowledge test: you can test twice in one day; after three failures, a second fee is required. Before the road test, the state requires 40 practice driving hours, including 10 after sunset.

REAL ID, motorcycle, and CDL

REAL ID available; over 95.5% of Utahns already have a compliant card (gold star). Those without one must visit a Driver License office with proof of identity, SSN, and Utah residency. Federal deadline May 7, 2025; not having one does not affect driving privileges. For a motorcycle license: motorcycle endorsement at 16, must already hold Class D license. Requires written knowledge test and skills test or MSF course completion. For a commercial license (CDL): minimum age 18, must have held Class D license for 1 year. Under-21 drivers restricted from passenger/school bus/hazmat endorsements and interstate driving.
