Sample question from test 8
emergencies
A stopped emergency vehicle has flashing lights on the shoulder. What is the required response when traffic permits?
- Move over one lane and slow at least 10 mph below the limit
- Maintain speed if your lane is open
- Stop beside the emergency vehicle to offer help
- Pass on the shoulder at the posted limit
Answer: Move over one lane and slow at least 10 mph below the limit. Michigan requires a driver approaching a stopped emergency vehicle to move over a lane when traffic and conditions allow and to slow at least 10 mph below the posted limit. If a lane change is not possible, slow down and pass cautiously with as much space as possible. An open lane does not cancel the rule, and stopping beside or passing on the shoulder creates additional danger for responders.
