Answer: As close as possible to the right edge, clear of the intersection. Michigan requires an immediate move toward the right edge or curb, followed by a stop that leaves the intersection open. Stopping in the middle of the intersection can obstruct the responding unit and create a second hazard. The left shoulder is not the normal refuge because it may place your vehicle in the path of opposing traffic. Before moving, signal and check the space beside you, then remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed or an officer signals that you may proceed. The practical cue is simple: right side, clear intersection, full stop.
