Sample sign question
Road signs
A red, eight-sided sign appears ahead. What action does its shape identify?
- Stop
- Yield to traffic without stopping
- Do not enter the roadway
- Railroad crossing ahead
Answer: Stop. The octagonal red shape identifies a STOP sign. It is not a yield sign, a prohibition against entering, or a railroad advance warning. At the sign, stop completely before the first painted line or before the crosswalk when one is present. Then check pedestrians and cross traffic and proceed only when the intersection is clear. The unusual eight-sided outline is intended to identify the required stop even when the sign face is hard to read from the back.
