A school bus is stopped with red lights flashing. How far away must you stop?
- At least 30 feet from the bus
- At least 10 feet from the bus
- At least 15 feet from the bus
- At least 50 feet from the bus
Answer: At least 30 feet from the bus. Whenever a bus shows its flashing red lights, a vehicle meeting or passing it from either direction must stop at least 30 feet away. The vehicle must remain stopped until the red lights are turned off. A yellow flashing light means the bus is preparing to stop, so the response changes to slowing and proceeding carefully. The 15 foot figure belongs to railroad crossing stopping distance, not this bus rule. The strong cue is red lights on a stopped bus: stop, leave 30 feet, and wait.
