3 questions from the Hawaii practice test

  1. 1. What is the minimum age for a Hawaii provisional license?

    1. 16 years
    2. 15 1/2 years
    3. 17 years
    4. 18 years
    Show answer

16 years. The graduated licensing rules set 16 years as the minimum age for a provisional license. Fifteen and a half is the instruction-permit threshold, while 17 is associated with the minimum age for the later driver license. Waiting until 18 would skip the provisional phase rather than state its entry point. Keep the milestones separate: permit eligibility begins earlier, provisional eligibility begins at 16 after the required preparation, and the full license has its own age and holding conditions.

  2. 2. How many passengers under age 18 may a Hawaii provisional licensee transport when the passenger is not a household member?

    1. Only one
    2. Two
    3. Three
    4. As many as fit with seat belts
    Show answer

Only one. A Hawaii provisional license allows transport of only one person under age 18 who is not a household member. The limit is a number, not a capacity calculation based on available belts or seats. Two or three such passengers exceed the stated allowance. The household-member wording also matters, because it identifies the exception rather than giving every young passenger the same status. Before accepting riders, count the under-18 passengers who are outside the household and keep that number at one or below.

  3. 3. When may a Hawaii provisional licensee drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. under the ordinary nighttime rule?

    1. When accompanied by a licensed parent or guardian
    2. Whenever the licensee has no passengers
    3. Whenever the road is dry and well lit
    4. Only after holding the provisional license for six months
    Show answer

When accompanied by a licensed parent or guardian. The ordinary nighttime permission requires accompaniment by a licensed parent or guardian. Empty seats, good weather, and street lighting do not create a general solo-driving exception. Six months is a separate holding period tied to applying for a driver license, not a blanket authorization for nighttime driving before that period ends. A provisional driver should check the clock first, then identify the required licensed family supervisor. Employment and school-authorized travel are listed separately as exceptions, so they should not be silently assumed here.
