3 questions from the Hawaii practice test

  1. 1. What must a Hawaii permit holder do before operating on a highway with an instruction permit?

    1. Wait until age 16 even if the permit was properly issued
    2. Drive alone only during daylight hours
    3. Carry a school identification card instead of a supervising driver
    4. Drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old
    Show answer

Drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old. The permit is a supervised learning authorization, not an unrestricted license. The manual requires a licensed driver at least 21 years old to accompany the permit holder on any highway. Daylight does not create a solo-driving exception, and a school card cannot perform the supervising role. The age 16 option skips the actual condition because a properly issued permit may be used before that birthday. The practical cue is simple: before starting, identify the qualified adult who will be riding with the learner and confirm that the adult is licensed for that vehicle.

  2. 2. For a Hawaii instruction permit holder, where must the supervising licensed driver sit in a passenger vehicle?

    1. Outside the vehicle at the curb
    2. In the rear seat behind the learner
    3. In any seat, provided the supervisor can see the road
    4. In the right front seat
    Show answer

In the right front seat. For vehicles except motorcycles, Hawaii places the qualified supervising driver in the right front seat. That location lets the supervisor observe the learner and respond during practice. Sitting behind the learner does not meet the stated placement, and visibility from another seat cannot substitute for the required position. A person standing outside the car is not supervising the operation from within the vehicle. Before practice begins, confirm the supervisor’s age, license class, and seat location together, because satisfying only one of those conditions is not enough.

  3. 3. Between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., whom must a Hawaii instruction permit holder have as the accompanying driver?

    1. A parent or guardian
    2. Any licensed passenger at least 21
    3. A coworker with a valid permit
    4. No accompanying driver when the trip is for school
    Show answer

A parent or guardian. The nighttime condition is narrower than the ordinary permit rule. Between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., the accompanying person must be the permit holder’s parent or guardian. Being at least 21 and licensed is not sufficient by itself during those hours, so the general-supervisor choice is too broad. A coworker with only a permit cannot qualify, and a school trip does not erase the nighttime condition. Treat the clock as a separate checkpoint: if the drive falls inside that window, verify the parent or guardian relationship before departure.
