Missouri drivers under 18 move through three steps: an instruction permit, an intermediate license, then a full under 21 license. Each step has its own age, supervision, passenger and night driving rules.

The law never gives anyone the right of way; it only says who must yield. Know who goes first at four way stops, uncontrolled intersections, left turns, driveways and roundabouts.

Passing, turning and signaling
Missouri limits when you may pass on the right or the left and bans passing near hills, curves, bridges, intersections and railroad crossings. Signal at least 100 feet before a turn and turn into the nearest proper lane.

Pull right and stop for emergency vehicles using a siren and flashing lights, and move over or slow down for stopped ones. Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and stop arm unless a Missouri exception applies.

Speed limits and minimum speeds
Posted limits are maximums for ideal conditions, so you must slow down when conditions demand it. Know Missouri's default limits, from 25 mph in towns to 70 mph on interstates.

A round yellow sign and pavement markings warn that a railroad crossing is near, and the crossbuck at the tracks means yield to trains. Stop 15 to 50 feet from the tracks when lights flash or the gate is down.

Alcohol limits and DWI penalties
It is illegal to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or more, 0.04% in a commercial vehicle, or 0.02% if you are under 21. A BAC arrest brings an administrative license action, and a DWI conviction adds fines, jail and longer license loss.

Underage drinking, Abuse and Lose, and getting your license back
Drivers under 21 can lose their license for alcohol or drug offenses under Missouri's Abuse and Lose and Minor in Possession laws. Getting a license back after an intoxication offense takes a fee, a SATOP program, SR-22 insurance and sometimes an ignition interlock.

Missouri adds points to your record for moving violations, and too many points in a set time lead to suspension or revocation. Some offenses, like speeding in a work zone or littering, also carry set fines.

Phones, distractions, fatigue and road rage
Missouri bans holding a phone or handling text messages while the vehicle is moving, though hands free calls are allowed. Stay alert, stop driving when sleepy, and never answer road rage with road rage.
