3 questions from the Florida practice test

  1. 1. How close to a flashing signal, stop sign, or traffic signal may a Florida driver park?

    1. No closer than 15 feet
    2. No closer than 20 feet
    3. No closer than 50 feet
    4. No closer than 30 feet
    Show answer

No closer than 30 feet. Florida's no parking list includes within 30 feet of any flashing signal, stop sign, or traffic signal, and within 30 feet of a rural mailbox on a state highway between 8 am and 6 pm. Fifty feet is the railroad crossing distance, and 20 feet is the distance from the entrance to a fire, ambulance or rescue station. Parking is also barred on overpasses, in tunnels, in front of driveways, by yellow curbs and on the roadway side of a parked vehicle.

  2. 2. When parking on a hill, how should you turn the wheels?

    1. So a rolling car moves away from traffic or into the curb
    2. Toward the center of the road on every hill
    3. Straight ahead, regardless of the grade
    4. Toward traffic whenever the parking brake is set
    Show answer

So a rolling car moves away from traffic or into the curb. Florida directs drivers to turn the wheels so that a vehicle that starts moving will roll away from traffic or into the curb. That positioning reduces the chance that a brake failure will send the car into moving vehicles. Straight wheels do not use the grade or curb to limit movement, and turning toward the center of the road increases exposure to traffic. Before leaving the vehicle, also set the parking brake, select Park or the appropriate manual gear, turn off the vehicle, and remove the keys.

  3. 3. Where should a driver park on a public road unless it is a one-way street?

    1. On the right side of the road
    2. On the left side facing traffic
    3. Across the nearest crosswalk
    4. In the center turn lane
    Show answer

On the right side of the road. Florida says to park on the right side of the road unless the street is one-way. The vehicle should also be parallel to the curb in the direction of traffic, with its right wheels close to the curb or roadway edge. Parking on the left while facing opposing traffic creates a hazard, and a crosswalk or center turn lane is not a parking place. Before leaving the vehicle, set the brake, secure the transmission, turn off the engine, lock the vehicle, and remove the keys.
