Getting your first permit

In Vermont, the minimum permit age is 15 years old. When you apply for a permit or license, bring: proof of identity/age (passport or birth certificate), Social Security proof, two VT residency documents, parent/guardian signature if under 18. All exams are by appointment only; other services recommend but don't require an appointment (walk-ins accepted).

Fees, retakes, and practice hours

$24 learner permit fee plus a separate $39 knowledge test fee (about $63 total). If you fail the knowledge test: must wait at least 1 day before retaking the knowledge test after failing. Before the road test, the state requires 40 hours of supervised driving (at least 10 at night), plus 6 hours behind-the-wheel from driver education, for junior (16-17) applicants.

REAL ID, motorcycle, and CDL

REAL ID available as an option alongside a standard Driver's Privilege Card, same cost; marked with a star in a circle. Federal enforcement date May 7, 2025 for air travel; no additional VT-specific deadline. For a motorcycle license: minimum age 16 (with junior license, parent/guardian must sign permit at 16-17). Requires 25-question knowledge exam (80% pass) plus skills exam. For a commercial license (CDL): minimum age 18 for CDL learner's permit and intrastate CDL; 21 required for interstate driving per USDOT regulation.
