Texas permit test: what to bring

What to bring to the Texas permit test

Who this checklist covers: First-time noncommercial Texas learner license applicants ages 15-17, applying for supervised passenger-vehicle driving. Adult first-time applicants use the separate adult Class C process; out-of-state transfers, hardship licenses, renewals and road tests are outside this checklist.

Bring originals unless the official list says copies are accepted.

Application

Identity

One primary identity document, two secondary documents, or one secondary plus two supporting documentsAn unexpired U.S. passport is a primary document. A birth certificate is secondary and alone is not sufficient for identity. Lawful presence

One accepted proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presenceFor example, an unexpired U.S. passport or original/certified U.S. birth certificate; noncitizens must use documents appropriate to their immigration status, such as I-551, EAD or a qualifying passport/visa/I-94 combination. Social Security number

Social Security number, or DL-13 affidavit if ineligibleDPS verifies issued numbers electronically. Residency

Two printed Texas residency proofs with your name and residential addressOne document must establish 30 days in Texas; this waiting period is waived when surrendering a valid unexpired out-of-state ID or license. Use separate sources, except separate statements for different residential services from one qualifying provider are allowed; repeated months of the same service are not. The current residency page accepts listed utility and financial statements within 180 days; DL-67 says 90 days, so use recent documents or confirm older ones with DPS. If unable to provide two proofs, follow the Residency Affidavit route. Parent or guardian

Driver education

Texas driver education classroom-completion certificateBring DE-964/DEE-964 for a certified-school or parent-taught course, or DE-964E for public-school instruction. High school diploma, GED or completed VOE formVOE must be signed and is valid for 30 days, or 90 days if issued June-August. The teen page allows a stamped/computer-generated school signature. Proof of passing the knowledge exam, if already completed through driver educationOtherwise take the knowledge exam at DPS. Adults 18-24 applying for a first Texas license need the six-hour adult driver education course; no driver education is required at 25 or older. Follow the adult application instructions rather than the teen learner checklist.
