Getting your first permit

In Oklahoma, the minimum permit age is 15 years old, must be enrolled in a driver education course. Fees, retakes, and practice hours

The written test itself is free online; a $4 fee applies per failed attempt, charged at permit issuance. If you fail the knowledge test: no mandatory wait for online retakes; after 2 failed online attempts must retest in person, no in-person wait period specified. Before the road test, the state requires 50 hours total, including 10 hours at night, with a licensed driver age 21 or older.

REAL ID, motorcycle, and CDL

First-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit to a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office/Licensed Operator; required for flights/federal facilities beginning May 7, 2025; over 50% of Oklahomans compliant as of reporting. For a motorcycle license: motorcycle endorsement minimum age 16 (permit at 14). Requires written and skills tests, or MSF Basics course which can waive skills/written tests. For a commercial license (CDL): minimum age 18 for intrastate driving. DOT medical certificate required for interstate; knowledge and skills tests and FMCSA-registered entry-level training required.
