New Jersey permit test: what to bring

What to bring to the New Jersey permit test

Who this checklist covers: First-time standard auto examination permits, ages 17 and older, including citizens and noncitizens. Excludes REAL ID, age-16 driving-school special learner permits, transfers and road tests.

Bring originals unless the official list says copies are accepted. Items marked Under 18 apply only to minors.

Application

Identity

Six points of age and identity documents in paper or hard copyUse the current standard guide: at least one primary and one secondary document totaling six points; no more than two one-point documents. Primary and secondary documents cannot be expired more than three years. Legal documents linking any name changesBring the certified documents linking your current name to the identification documents. Social Security number

Social Security number, ITIN, or the applicable affidavitEnter your SSN for electronic SSA verification. If verification fails, bring a listed full-name/full-SSN document, such as the original SSN card or a W-2/pay stub from the past year. Alternatively bring an official IRS or NJ tax document showing your ITIN. If ineligible for an SSN and without an ITIN, sign the official affidavit before a notary or MVC employee. Residency

Proof of New Jersey residential addressBring one proof showing your name and residential address, on paper or electronically. Examples include a bank or utility statement within the past year, an unexpired lease, or school records within two years.
