Take the knowledge test in person at select deputy registrar locations or any driver exam station, or online. Then buy the permit at any deputy registrar license agency.

Test languages and ID

Test languages

The knowledge test is offered in text and audio in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Haitian Creole, Japanese, Russian, Somali, and Spanish, and in text and video in American Sign Language.

REAL ID

REAL ID is optional: you can choose a Compliant card or a Standard card.

The knowledge test has 40 multiple choice questions. You must answer 75 percent correctly to pass.

You can take the knowledge test online instead. The vision screening is then done at a deputy registrar license agency when you buy the permit.

If you fail, wait at least 24 hours to retest. Online testing is limited to two attempts in six months.
