What to bring to the North Carolina permit test

Who this checklist covers: First-time standard non-REAL ID passenger-vehicle learner permits for U.S. citizens: limited learner permit ages 15-17 and adult learner permit age 18+. Noncitizen/no-SSN routes, REAL ID, transfers and road tests are outside this checklist.

Bring originals unless the official list says copies are accepted. Items marked Under 18 apply only to minors.

Application

Identity

Social Security number

Residency

One proof of North Carolina residencyExamples include a lease, utility bill, financial statement or school record. Minors may use school records, a lease naming them as occupants, dependent tax records or other listed minor evidence. Good to know

North Carolina ended the teen Driving Eligibility Certificate requirement effective October 1, 2026. Driver Education Certificate and parent/guardian consent still apply.
