LBC ZIP patterns

Central Long Beach versus East Side

Long Beach ZIPs vary widely. Central (90813, 90810) and west (90805, 90806) run higher auto premium because of theft and uninsured-motorist density. Eastside (90803, 90804) and Belmont Shore (90803) run lower. Port-area households (longshoremen, trucking, logistics) cluster across central LBC and have their own commercial-auto considerations if work vehicles are involved.

LBC-specific patterns

Two situations we see

Port-area worker households

Longshoremen, trucking, and logistics workers based out of the Port of Long Beach often have irregular shift patterns and sometimes commercial vehicles registered personally. We separate personal auto from commercial use, and route work vehicles to the appropriate commercial-auto policy. More: commercial auto.

Auto theft and comprehensive coverage

Central Long Beach has elevated auto theft and vandalism rates compared to OC. Comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible is the standard recommendation, even for older vehicles where we'd normally consider dropping it. Catalytic converter theft remains common on Prius and Honda Element specifically.

Questions from Long Beach clients

What we get asked from 908xx

I work at the Port and drive a personal truck home. Personal or commercial?

Personal commute, even with a heavy-duty truck, is personal. If you haul anything for work in that truck, even occasionally, that crosses into commercial. We disclose the use at quote and route accordingly.

My Honda Element keeps getting hit for catalytic converter theft. Worth claim?

Each claim affects future premium. If the loss is under $1,500 and your comprehensive deductible is $500, paying out of pocket and avoiding the claim is often the better long-term math. We'll walk through the trade-off.

I just got a DUI in Lakewood. How fast can you file SR-22?

Same day in most cases. Bring the DMV Order to Comply, license number, and the VIN of any car you own. We bind at Bristol West, Aspire, or Kemper depending on the quote that comes back cleanest. SR-22 lands at DMV within 2 to 5 business days. More: SR-22 details.

Long Beach in depth

What an insurance broker actually checks in Long Beach

Local facts that change how a California auto, home, or SR-22 quote actually rates. Every number cites a public source (Census, FBI UCR, dmv.ca.gov, school district sites). No carrier numbers here are guaranteed; final premium depends on verified data from the carrier.

Overview

Long Beach is a southern Los Angeles County city, both a beach city and a major port city. I read this city in layers, not as one suburb. There is downtown, the port, the Belmont Shore beach community, Naples, Bixby Knolls, North Long Beach, West Long Beach, Cambodia Town, and the area near California State University Long Beach, each with its own driving and parking pattern. Long Beach was reincorporated December 3, 1897, and Census 2020 recorded 466,742 residents. The Long Beach ZIPs I see most often when writing policies include 92802 through 92810, 92813 through 92815, 92822, and 92840 (along with some special-use mailing ZIPs). So the first question I ask is where the car actually parks at night: near the port, near the beach, in an apartment, or in a private home garage.

Community and neighborhoods

The Vietnamese-American community in Long Beach is real but much smaller than in Westminster, Garden Grove, or San Jose. ACS data via CensusDepth lists Vietnamese at about 0.7 percent of Long Beach population, roughly 3,200 residents against the ACS 2023 city population. I share that number so clients understand the actual context: Long Beach is not Little Saigon, but Vietnamese families live across East Long Beach, North Long Beach, near the university, near Lakewood, and along the corridors heading toward Orange County. The most visible Southeast Asian cultural anchor here is Cambodia Town along Anaheim Street between Atlantic Boulevard and Junipero Avenue, and Long Beach is known as the largest Cambodian community outside Southeast Asia. For Vietnamese-American clients, that creates a familiar immigrant-community feel for markets, restaurants, services, and daily life. CSULB enrolled more than 41,000 students in Fall 2024, so I also see student-driver quotes, families buying a car for a college student, or households living close to campus.

Schools and teen drivers

Long Beach Unified School District is the main district I check when a family has a child approaching driving age. LBUSD serves Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, and Avalon, so I do not assume the district by city alone. The LBUSD high schools I reference most often are Wilson High School, Long Beach Polytechnic High School, Cabrillo High School, Jordan High School, Millikan High School, and Lakewood High School. Lakewood High sits outside Long Beach city but is in LBUSD, so families near the city-Lakewood border should check the boundary and any School Choice option. When adding a teen driver, I ask whether the teen has a permit or license, which vehicle they actually drive, the school commute distance, whether they hold a part-time job, and whether the transcript is available for a good-student discount check. Long Beach teens may drive on large arterials, school parking lots, the CSULB campus, retail centers, and freeways, so accurate mileage and driver listing matter more than chasing a shortcut discount.

Freeways, intersections, and theft data

Long Beach has a dense and varied freeway network. Interstate 405 crosses the north side, Interstate 710 runs along the port and Los Angeles River, Interstate 605 sits east near the Seal Beach and Los Alamitos borders, State Route 22 begins at the west side near State Route 1 and 7th Street, State Route 1 is Pacific Coast Highway, and State Route 91 affects the northern part of the city. I ask whether clients commute toward the port, downtown Los Angeles, Orange County, the South Bay, or Riverside County because each corridor has its own congestion. Heavy port truck traffic around the Port of Long Beach makes West Long Beach and the Interstate 710 corridor feel different than Belmont Shore or Naples. Beach traffic on weekends, downtown events, the Queen Mary, the Pike, the Aquarium, and CSULB activity also drive parking-lot claims. LBPD reported 4,180 motor vehicle thefts in 2024, roughly 896 per 100,000 against Census 2020 population, so I press hard on comprehensive coverage when the car parks on the street or in an apartment lot.

How insurance is rated here

I do not quote Long Beach auto insurance with a single citywide premium. Under California Proposition 103, the heaviest rating weight goes to driving safety record, annual mileage, and California license tenure, and credit score is not allowed for personal auto rating. I verify the true garaging address, California license tenure, driving record, annual mileage, vehicle, coverage limits, deductibles, prior insurance, and every licensed driver living at the household. ZIP rating inside Long Beach can swing materially: West Long Beach near the port and truck corridor reads differently than Belmont Shore near the beach, different again from North Long Beach with heavier street parking, and different from East Long Beach near CSULB and Lakewood. Census QuickFacts shows median household income at about $83,969 for ACS 2019 to 2023, but income is not a rating factor. I use it only to understand the budget pressure across premium, deductible, full coverage, rental, and uninsured-motorist coverage choices.

DMV and post-accident process

For DMV access, I have confirmed one operating California DMV field office inside Long Beach: Long Beach DMV at 3700 East Willow Street, Long Beach 90815. When that office runs full, clients can use Bellflower DMV at 9520 Artesia Blvd, Bellflower 90706, Westminster DMV at 13700 Hoover Street, Westminster 92683, or Compton DMV at 2111 South Santa Fe Avenue, Compton 90221. For a private-party purchase, a missing pink slip, or a title transfer without the original certificate, the right form is REG 227 (Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title). For a suspension, DUI, or proof-of-financial-responsibility requirement, the SR-22 filing must be transmitted electronically with the correct name and driver license number. For city-street incidents, Long Beach Police Department handles the report. For incidents on Interstate 405, Interstate 710, Interstate 605, State Route 22, State Route 1, or State Route 91, California Highway Patrol typically investigates and the report flows through the CHP system based on incident location.
