Key points
- Check the exact 2027 plan, not only the carrier name and not only whether the doctor accepts Medicare.
- Use the plan provider directory, call the plan, and ask the doctor's office which plans they accept for 2027.
- In many HMOs, choosing a primary care doctor also connects you to a medical group, hospitals, and specialists. Ask what group assignment means.
- Check the doctor, medical group or IPA, hospital, specialist, and pharmacy separately.
- If a doctor leaves the network, the plan should notify you and help you choose another provider. Call the plan and Medicare if ongoing care may be interrupted.
Start with the exact plan name
Write down the plan's full name, contract and plan number if shown, and the 2027 plan year. A carrier can have different plans with different networks. A doctor listed for one plan is not automatically listed for another.
Search the plan's 2027 provider directory by doctor name, address, specialty, and medical group when available. Save the result date and page.
Check Vietnamese language support
Ask the office whether the doctor personally speaks Vietnamese or whether the office uses an interpreter. Ask whether the language service is available for the visit, phone calls, and urgent questions. Do not treat a directory language field as a promise about every appointment.
Ask the plan how to request an interpreter. Medicare plan documents explain the plan's member services and language assistance process.
Check medical group, hospital, and referral rules
For an HMO, ask which primary care doctor and medical group or IPA you would select. In some plans, that choice connects you to a set of hospitals and specialists. Ask whether referrals are needed and whether the selected group has the hospital you use.
Check the hospital separately. A primary doctor can be in network while a hospital or specialist used by that doctor is not in the same network.
Check the pharmacy and formulary
Part D coverage has a drug list called a formulary and a pharmacy network. Confirm the pharmacy for the exact plan and check each prescription in the 2027 formulary. A clinic's pharmacy recommendation is not a substitute for checking the plan.
If the doctor leaves the network
Medicare says a plan can change its network but must protect access to medically necessary covered benefits and avoid interruptions in care. A plan should make a good faith effort to give at least 30 days' notice when a regular provider is leaving.
Call the plan, ask about continuity of care, get the notice in writing, and ask for another Vietnamese-speaking provider. If you believe the network change risks an interruption, call 1-800-MEDICARE.
Steps
- Get the 2027 plan name. Do not search by carrier alone.
- Search the directory. Check doctor, medical group, hospital, specialist, and pharmacy.
- Call the plan. Ask member services to confirm the provider is in network for 2027.
- Call the office. Ask which Medicare plans and medical groups the office accepts for 2027.
- Save proof. Keep the directory result, call date, representative name, and written answer.
Quick check
- The doctor speaks Vietnamese or can arrange an interpreter.
- The doctor is in the exact 2027 plan network.
- The medical group or IPA and hospital fit the family's needs.
- The pharmacy is in network and the medicines are on the formulary.
- I know what to do if the provider leaves the network.
Questions to ask
- Do you accept this exact Medicare plan for 2027?
- Are you accepting new patients in this plan?
- Which medical group or IPA would I be assigned to?
- Which hospital and specialists are connected to that group?
- Do I need a referral?
- Is the pharmacy in the plan's network?
Common questions
Does a Vietnamese-speaking doctor automatically accept my Medicare plan?
No. Check the exact 2027 plan directory, call the plan, and ask the doctor's office which plans it accepts for 2027.
What is a medical group or IPA?
It is a group or network that may organize primary care, specialists, and hospitals inside an HMO. Ask the plan which group assignment applies and what it controls.
Do I need to check the hospital too?
Yes. A doctor and hospital can have different network status. Check each one for the exact plan and year.
Do pharmacies have networks too?
Yes. Part D plans use pharmacy networks. Check whether your pharmacy is in network and whether it is preferred.
What if my doctor leaves the network?
Call the plan, ask about notice and continuity of care, choose another in-network doctor if needed, and call 1-800-MEDICARE if ongoing care may be interrupted.
Can I get Vietnamese interpreter help?
Ask the plan's member services about interpreter assistance and ask the doctor's office what language help is available for visits and calls.
