People on SSI can apply for CalFresh
Before June 1, 2019, people receiving SSI/SSP in California could not get CalFresh. According to CDSS, since summer 2019 people receiving or approved for SSI/SSP can apply for CalFresh, as long as they meet the other requirements.
If you were turned down before because of SSI, apply again.
Easier income rules for households with older adults
Households with someone 60 or older, or with a disability, do not have to meet the gross income limit (total income before deductions); the county looks only at income after allowed deductions.
People 60 or older, or with a disability, can also deduct out-of-pocket medical costs (not reimbursed) above $35 a month, such as medicine, doctor visits, or health insurance premiums. Keep your receipts to report to the county.
New work rules from June 2026
According to CDSS, since June 1, 2026 some CalFresh recipients ages 18 to 64 may have to meet work or community engagement requirements to keep CalFresh. People under 18 or over 64 are excused.
People receiving or applying for disability benefits, including SSI, are also excused. If you think you are excused, tell your county office.
Other 2026 changes
According to CDSS, since April 1, 2026 some groups of lawfully present immigrants are no longer eligible for CalFresh, including refugees, asylees, and many parolees; some groups, such as Cuban/Haitian Entrants, are not affected. People already receiving CalFresh are reviewed under the new rules at their first renewal after April 1, 2026. If your family is in one of these groups, ask your county office about your situation.
Households with someone over 60 or with a disability still receive the energy assistance payment that lets them use the standard utility deduction, which can increase CalFresh.
