Why Mercury anchors our book

Mercury is the California carrier we place most often

Mercury Insurance is a California-domiciled carrier headquartered in Los Angeles. Founded in 1962 by George Joseph, the company is built around the California auto market specifically, which makes it consistently competitive in our ZIP codes (92683 Westminster, 92840 Garden Grove, 92703 Santa Ana, 92708 Fountain Valley). Per the NAIC 2024 complaint index, Mercury sits at 0.41 on auto, well below the industry mean of 1.0. That number matters more than marketing copy. For a typical clean-record Westminster household with 2 vehicles, Mercury usually comes back as either the #1 or #2 carrier in our quote shop, and it wins outright more often than any other carrier in our book.

Where Mercury fits best

Standard auto, bundles, and the non-standard tier for AB60

Mercury has a clear lane: standard California auto for households with clean records, multi-policy bundles when home insurance is also needed, and a separate non-standard tier that accepts AB60 drivers after 6+ months of U.S. residency. For new-arrival AB60 cases without that residency window, we typically route to Bristol West, Aspire, or Kemper first and migrate to Mercury non-standard at the 6 or 12 month mark, then to Mercury standard once SSN and credit history are in place. Mercury also writes homeowners across most of Orange County, including the 92683 to 92708 corridor, and the auto-plus-home bundle is where the biggest discount usually lives.

Discounts that actually stack

Multi-policy, multi-car, telematics, paid-in-full

Mercury allows the heaviest discount stack we see in California. Multi-policy with home knocks 15 to 25% off the combined premium. Multi-car (two or more vehicles on the same policy) adds another 8 to 15%. The California Good Driver discount under Insurance Code §1861.025 is mandatory at 20% off for clean records. Mercury Drive (the telematics product) can shave 10 to 30% more after a monitoring period for safe driving. Paying in full instead of monthly typically saves another 5 to 10%. We confirm at quote which combination Mercury actually applies for your profile.

When Mercury isn't the right answer

SR-22 cases, recent at-faults, certain ZIP risks

Mercury declines a lot of cases other people assume it should accept. New-driver SR-22 with no prior insurance history, multiple at-fault accidents in the last 3 years, certain high-risk vehicle classes, and properties with recent water or fire claims all get routed elsewhere. We've seen Mercury non-renew owners with one large home claim plus a moderate auto claim in the same 3-year window. None of this is a Mercury problem, it's an underwriting appetite issue. When we know upfront Mercury won't take the case, we don't waste time pulling the quote; we go to Bristol West, Aspire, Kemper, or Travelers depending on what the case looks like.

Questions we hear at intake

Mercury Insurance questions from Westminster clients

Does Mercury accept AB60 drivers?

Yes, through their non-standard tier. Underwriting usually wants 6+ months of U.S. residency and an ITIN if no SSN. New arrivals typically start at Bristol West, Aspire, or Kemper and migrate to Mercury non-standard at 6 months and to Mercury standard at 12 months with clean record + SSN.

How does Mercury compare to State Farm or Allstate for OC families?

Mercury is California-focused while State Farm and Allstate are national. For Orange County profiles specifically, Mercury is often more competitive on price and broader on appetite. State Farm paused new home business statewide in 2023 and has been selective on auto. We quote Mercury on almost every case as a baseline.

What's Mercury's claims process like for Vietnamese-speaking households?

Mercury maintains a Vietnamese-language claims line. Claim turnaround is typically average for the industry. We've handled multiple Mercury claims from start to finish for our clients and the experience is consistent. We follow the file with you so you're not navigating the carrier alone.
