OS Commerce Permissions

I am using the built-in editor in OS Commerce to change the text on my front page but I get the message that index.php does not have write permissions. I checked the file and it is 644. I tried 664 and then 666 and only the last let me edit the file. This would mean to me that the owner of the OS Commerce files is not who OS Commerce is running as. Is this because I used Fantastico to auto-install the package? Is there anyway I can change the owner so I don't have to set the file world writable when I'm editing it?
